Wilbert A. Schwoch
Beaver Dam Daily Citizen :: OBITUARIES ::
Thursday, February 23, 2006
Wilbert Alvin Elmer Schwoch was born on June 15, 1918, in Calamus township on
a farm near Lost Lake in Dodge County. His parents were Otto and Elsie (Derge)
Schwoch. Wilbert was the middle child having an older sister, Erna, and a
younger brother, Willis. Wilbert was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church,
Beaver Dam, and was baptized and confirmed there. He graduated from Beaver Dam
High School in 1937.
After graduation he began work at Monarch Range. He started in the warehouse
and rose to the position of credit manager. He met his future wife, Eleanor
Christ, while working at Monarch. Wilbert worked at Monarch Range for 46 years
until his retirement.
During World War II he was stationed at Schumaker Naval Hospital near
Pleasanton, Calif., where he served as a medical corpsman at the 3180-bed
hospital. His job was to diagnose and admit patients and he earned enough points
to qualify as a registered nurse.
Wilbert was very active in the community. He was in Lutheran Brotherhood, served
as treasurer of the church council and was a member of the American Legion and
the 40&8. He was elected commander of the local legion post in 1953. He also
served on the board for the Beaver Dam Vocational School and served as the
chairman at the time the new facilities were built on Gould Street, and also
served on the United Way board. After retirement, Wilbert volunteered for eight
years at the Adult Day Care Center at Beaver Dam Community Hospital.
Wilbert and Eleanor enjoyed traveling and they were able to visit every state,
Canada and Mexico. They toured Europe where they saw 12 countries and they had a
delightful trip to Australia and New Zealand. Wilbert often entertained seniors
groups, showing slides from these many trips.
Growing up on the shores of Lost Lake developed his lifelong interest in
fishing, which he continued to pursue up to the time he and Eleanor moved to
Stone Terrace. No one really knows how many bullheads he pulled out of Beaver
Dam Lake.
Wilbert died at the age of 87, on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006. He was preceded in
death by his parents; his wife of 63 years, Eleanor; one sister, Erna Kittinger,
and one brother, Willis.
Survivors include his children, Janet Jones, Woodland Hills, Calif, and Gerald
Schwoch, Middleton, Wis.; five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m., at the Koepsell
Funeral Home, Beaver Dam. The Rev. Paul Lindau will officiate. Visitation will
be on Saturday, from 2:30 p.m. until the time of service at 4 p.m., at the
Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Beaver
