Wisconsin Census Information

Not all counties for all years. 1836 (included area that became Iowa Territory), 1838, 1842, 1846, 1847, 1855, 1865 (only Dunn, Green, Jackson, Kewaunee, Ozaukee, Sheboygan counties), 1875, 1885, 1895, 1905 (names family members); 1885, 1895, and 1905 available on microfilm at Family History Centers. Some town enumerations are at county register of deeds or in circuit court files.

Check with the Wisconsin Historical Society for interlibrary loan. All federal schedules, for all states, are at the Wisconsin Historical Society. The society also has original state copy manuscripts of the 1850, 1860, and 1870 federal census for Wisconsin. Every-name indexes to the state copies of the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses, on microfilm are available through interlibrary laon from that repository. Mortality schedules are indexed and available through interlibrary loan, except for the 1880, which is not indexed. The 1820 to 1870 censuses for Wisconsin were also indexed by the Works Project Administration (WPA), listing each individual within the state in a given census year.

This was a head of households census with a format similar to the 1846 territorial census, complete for all counties except Sheboygan county is missing. Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1980, 2 rolls as follows: 1847 territorial census, Brown to Sheboygan County (Sheboygan missing), FHL film #1293921 and 1847 territorial census, Walworth to Winnebago County, FHL film #1293922.
     
  • 1850 Wisconsin Federal Census (Federal Copy), microfilm of original records at the National Archives, Washington, D.C. The census schedules include the names of all members of a family, age, sex, and place of birth. Since Wisconsin has the state copies of the state federal census schedules, a comparison can be made between the federal and state copies. The federal set was filmed by the National Archives, 1964, 16 rolls, beginning with FHL film #34508 (Adams, Brown, Calumet, Chippewa, and Columbia Counties).
     
  • Every-name Index to the 1850 Federal Census of Wisconsin (State Copy), microfilm of original card index at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Madison, Wisconsin. The index is to the state copy, and volumes and page numbers, given in the census index do not always match the federal copy of the census. The alphabetized list of names is for the entire state, regardless of county of residence.   • 1860 Wisconsin Federal Census (Federal Copy), microfilm of original records in the National Archives, Washington, D.C. The 1860 census was filmed twice. The second filming was listed first and is usually easier to read. However, since some of the records were faded or lost between the first and second filming, search the first filming whenever the material on the second filming is tool light or missing. FHL film copies on 49 folls, beginning with FHL film #805399 (2nd filming, Adams and Bad Ax Counties). The late 1860 federal census for Wisconsin is indexed at HeritageQuest Online (head of households), Ancestry.com (every-name), and a few other Web sites.

  • 1870 Wisconsin Federal Census (Federal Copy), microfilm of original records at the National Archives, Washington, D.C. The 1870 census was filmed twice.
